Koh Samui, Thai: เกาะสมุย is an island off the east coast of the Kra Isthmus, Thailand. Geographically in the Chumphon Archipelago, it is part of Surat Thani Province, though as of 2012, Ko Samui was granted Municipality status and thus is now locally self-governing. Ko Samui is Thailand's second-largest island after Phuket, a population of over 63,000 and a hotel occupancy rate of 73 percent as the number of visitors increases.Abundant tourist resources, sandy beaches, coral reefs, and coconut trees are present on the island.

The central part of Ko Samui is the mostly unspoiled, natural tropical jungle, including the largest mountain named Khao Pom, peaking at 635 meters. The various lowland and coastal areas are connected by Route 4169, which is a 51 km road, running primarily along the coastline and encircling the bulk of the island. Many other concrete roads branch off from 4169 to service other areas.

Koh Samui (Samui Island) is a cosmopolitan melting pot, attracting budget travellers staying for a month or two in simple beachside bungalows, to the wealthiest holidaymakers dropping in for a weekend at one of the many luxury resort or villa on the many white sand beaches of Koh Samui.

From the hustle and bustle of Chaweng Beach to the lively yet relaxed atmosphere of Lamai Beach to the timeless feel of Bophut's Fisherman's Village to the tropical beach paradise of Maenam, Koh Samui is unique among Thailand's islands in maintaining a broad appeal for everyone. This helps to give the distinctive relaxed atmosphere that sets it apart.

Activities

Diving in Koh Samui is yet another reason to visit this tropical wonderland! With clear blue waters, warm waters and amazing marine life, it's no surprise that the area is an extremely popular destination for both experienced divers and those wanting to take up the sport.

Short, accredited dive courses are readily available and prices are very reasonable compared to most countries. There's a wide range of dive shops offering all levels of instruction and if you look around, it's not difficult to find courses conducted in the language of your choice (except maybe Inuit).

In addition to the affordable prices, one of the obvious reasons dive courses are so popular here is the great locations from which they are conducted -- your instruction is usually right by the beach in the shallow, calm waters off Chaweng, Coral Cove or several other places around the island. The water visibility is anywhere between 3-30 metres. The currents around Samui itself are variable, but usually not too strong except on the west coast during the monsoon months.
